Stories of the people named on Symphony Hall seats

When losing a loved one, it is natural for us to want to hold on to them - to not let go. Many of us keep mementos of those we mourn that may not have any material value to others which yet hold immeasurable sentimental value to us. We may attempt to preserve their memories in photographs or personal possessions, treasuring the emotional value in items that to any other person may otherwise be easily discarded.

We sometimes choose to honour the memory of loved ones by dedicating a place or object to them, in a place that held particular importance or significance to either ourselves, or the loved ones we dearly miss. These dedications are usually short and sweet - mentioning a name, and perhaps a single sentence about them, and that's all they tell the reader.

This project, Echoes and Reflections, hopes to reveal more about the person dedicated, and also the person who made it - allowing them to express their emotions and feelings, to recall memories and anecdotes that will give us sitting in their seats, an insight into the life of that person.

Each participant was invited to be filmed sharing their memories of the dedicatee and to bring along an object they keep that reminds them of their friendship and relationship.

You can watch them tell their stories, and read about the items they keep to remember their loved ones.

Are you affected by this project?

While this project is intended to celebrate the lives of people, we understand the subject of grief, loss and mourning can be difficult for some people to deal with.

There are a number of organisations that can help support those struggling with loss or grief.
